A Composite can be defined as a mixture of two or more materials having different properties of the materials of which it is made. These types of materials are generally used for bridges, buildings, swimming pool panels, shower stalls, bathtubs, imitation granite, cultured marble sinks. Bone and wood are typical examples of natural composites whereas the grapheme and epoxy resin are the examples of the anti-corrosive composites.  There are two parts in the composites, the first one is the reinforcing phase and the other one is the binder. Nowadays, the composites are used instead of metals due to its lighter weight.

  • Lightweight: They have a specific gravity in the region of 1.5 as compared to steel of 7.8. One of the anti-corrosive composite known as carbon laminates has strength, which is many times of the steel. 
  • Low weight to strength ratio: The fiber composites are very strong for their weight. Many characteristics can be enhanced by refining the laminate. For example, a common laminate of 2 mm is more flexible to a 2 mm ply.
  • Fire Resistance: Over the years, the ability of the composites to withstand the fire has been improved continuously. There are basically two types of systems such as fire retardant and fire resistant. The fire retardant is usually made with the additives and chlorinated resins whereas the fire resistant is made with the Phenolic Resins.

  • High impact strength: The anti-corrosive composite is made to absorb the high impacts such as a blast from an explosion or sudden force of a bullet. Due to this reason, the composites are used in military vehicles and bulletproof vests.
  • Nonconductive: These materials are nonconductive, which means that they don’t conduct electricity. That’s why these materials are used in circuit boards and electric utility poles. Also, it is possible to make some composites conductive if the electrical conductivity is needed.
  • Flexibility: In composites, there is a great range of material combinations can be used allowing design flexibility. In addition to this, the composites can be molded into the complicated shapes easily.
